  • ‘Ender’s Game’ Was Top-Selling Science Fiction Book of 2012

‘Ender’s Game’ Was Top-Selling Science Fiction Book of 2012

    Enders-Game1

Apparently the term “oldie but goodie” applies to the book Ender’s Game, which according to Publisher’s Weekly, was the top-selling science fiction book of 2012. The book not only topped the genre, but outsold the 2nd listed book by almost 200%.

    Science Fiction

    1. Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. Tor. 100,387
    2. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Broadway. 50,593
    3. Star Wars: Darth Plagueis by James Luceno. Lucas Books. 31,543
    4. The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Del Rey. 27,220
    5. Star Wars: Apocalypse by Troy Denning. Lucas Books. 26,140
    6. Dune by Frank Herbert. Ace. 25,532
    7. A Rising Thunder by David Weber. Baen Books. 25,348
    8. HALO: The Thursday War by Karen Traviss. Tor. 24,936
    9. HALO: Glasslands by Karen Traviss. Tor. 24,932
    10. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Ballantine. 24,120

Perhaps news of the movie has re-ignited interest in the novel, as that seems like quite a few copies to sell for a book that’s heading into its 28th year in publication.

It should be noted, however, that this list likely only lists statistics for print editions. The self published science fiction e-book Wool by Hugh Howey is nowhere to be found on the list, despite its explosion into the science fiction genre last year. If you’re a fan of Wool, be sure to visit my fansite for it: The Down Deep.

16 year-old actress Hailee Steinfeld (Petra) will appear on the March 2013 issue of Fashion Magazine.

No stranger to strong women, Hailee Steinfeld’s seven upcoming films have her playing roles that befit her star turn as True Grit’s Mattie Ross.  In a film called Enders Game, she plays a self-described “a A-type genius” alongside a cast that includes Harrison Ford and Viola Davis.

The magazine will be on newsstands February 11, 2013. To read more of Hailee’s interview, go to Fashion Magazine.

  • Video: Who the Hell is Harrison Ford?

Video: Who the Hell is Harrison Ford?

TMZ caught actor Moises Arias (Bonzo) in a parking lot and presumably asked him about what he thought when he found out he’d be acting in a movie with movie legend Harrison Ford and the answer they got wasn’t exactly what they expected.

    “I don’t think I knew Harrison Ford.”

It’s always possible they asked him if he knew him personally before the film, not if he knew who he was, but the video in general is rather amusing. Despite TMZ’s shock at the fact that kids today don’t know him or don’t seem to care, my guess is that’s totally okay with Harrison Ford, who reportedly despises the diehard Star Wars fans that hound him. And really, who wouldn’t?

  • Rumor: James Horner to Score ‘Ender’s Game’

Rumor: James Horner to Score ‘Ender’s Game’

    James-Horner

According to Film Music Reporter, two time Academy-award winning composer James Horner has signed on to score the upcoming film adaptation Ender’s Game.

As a longtime fan of Horner’s music in truly amazing scores such as Titanic, Braveheart, and Legends of the Fall, I’m trying my best not to utterly freak out over this possibility. But since the site doesn’t quote a source, I’ve tagged it as a rumor until I can get confirmation.

Horner brings an incredible amount of experience to the film, having scored over 150 films in his career in movie music starting back in 1978.

Earth Unaware in Paperback Available April 30

    Earth-Unaware

For those of you that have been waiting for a paperback version of the First Formic War prequel series by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston, the book is now available for pre-order and will ship around April 30, 2013.

Here’s the synopsis of the novel:

A hundred years before Ender’s Game, humans thought they were alone in the galaxy. Humanity was slowly making their way out from Earth to the planets and asteroids of the Solar System, exploring and mining and founding colonies.

The mining ship El Cavador is far out from Earth, in the deeps of the Kuiper Belt, beyond Pluto. Other mining ships, and the families that live on them, are few and far between this far out. So when El Cavador’s telescopes pick up a fast-moving object coming in-system, it’s hard to know what to make of it. It’s massive and moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light.

But the ship has other problems. Their systems are old and failing. The family is getting too big. There are claim-jumping corporates bringing Asteroid Belt tactics to the Kuiper Belt. Worrying about a distant object that might or might not be an alien ship seems…not important.

They’re wrong. It’s the most important thing that has happened to the human race in a million years. This is humanity’s first contact with an alien race. The First Formic War is about to begin.
