  • ‘Ender’s Game’ Trailer to Come with ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’?

‘Ender’s Game’ Trailer to Come with ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’?

Ever since we all heard that some press got to see the trailer at the GAMA Trade Show in Vegas last week, the question everyone seems to be asking is when do the rest of us get to see it?

Someone tweeted to producer Bob Orci asking when we’re getting a trailer, but doesn’t specify if he’s asking about Ender’s Game.

    Bob-Tweet1

In any case, Orci responded with “Yup!” So was he actually talking Ender’s Game here?

Pretty likely. His previous tweet was a link to the Ender’s Game blog post on Tumblr. The only other movie that he’s producing (besides Star Trek) that will be out this year is Now You See Me, but the trailer for that movie has been out for quite a while already.

The unfortunate part about that is that Star Trek Into Darkness isn’t in theaters until May 17. That’s practically two months from now! Do we really have to wait that long for a trailer? I had really hoped to see a trailer attached to movies such as The Host, G.I. Joe: Retaliation (March 29), or Oblivion (April 19).

Or maybe they’ll debut it online and simply start showing it in theaters in Star Trek. What do you think about waiting until May for a trailer?

  • Gavin Hood Talks Battle Room with Yahoo! Movies

Gavin Hood Talks Battle Room with Yahoo! Movies

    Battle-Room

In a phone interview with Yahoo! Movies, director Gavin Hood talked about the size of the Battle Room.

“This is the high school football field, only it’s in three dimensions. It’s the size of a football field in all directions: up, down, left, right. And the idea is teams jump out from opposite ends of this amazing space and play this amazing game of 3D paintball, almost.”

Ever since we saw on set how they planned to show the Battle Room, I’ve been dying for other fans to see their vision, which makes my own imagination’s gray room and cubic stars seem so lame in comparison. So how did they arrive at the design?

One deviation from the book is that in the original text the Battle Room is described as being a giant hollow cube. But Hood felt that to really convey the size and dimensionality of the space, it should be spherical. Hood said he then proposed, “What if we could see through? What if we could see out of the space, and we’re moving around the Earth and turning at the same time?” He said he felt that would create “a really strange, disorienting experience,” that would better capture the notion in the book that in space there really is no up or down.

Strange and disorienting is right! I’d probably be downright terrified the first time I saw the Battle Room. With Earth visible right outside I can imagine the feeling that you’re floating in space takes some getting used to. Or do you think that young children would have an easier time adjusting to such an intense arena?

Yahoo! Movies Unveils First Poster for ‘Ender’s Game’ Movie

It’s finally here, Launchies! Thanks to Yahoo! Movies, the first poster for the Ender’s Game movie has officially landed and boy is it a doozy!

    Enders-Game-Poster

As most of us probably guessed from the teaser image director Gavin Hood posted to Tumblr yesterday, the poster shows Ender Wiggin as he’s about to enter the Battle Room. He stands on the edge of the gate (which is down!) of the Battle Room.

His helmet is orange and you can see the Dragon Army logo on the back. What do you guys think!?

You can see stars floating around inside and a stunning view of Earth behind him, meaning that the Battle Room, unlike in my dull and drab imagination, has transparent walls and the kids battle as if they’re in space. Amazing, right?

Gavin Hood Previews Ender’s Game One-Sheet Teaser

Some of you may have seen a leaked image last Friday of the first Ender’s Game and stuff like that is always a little unfortunate because while we’re all starved for Ender’s Game stuff, there’s always that disappointment at seeing something not as we were intended to see it.

Thankfully, director Gavin Hood has an official teaser of a teaser (I love saying that!) on the Ender’s Game production blog for us to drool over until we get to see the poster ourselves in theaters. He’s also given us some insight into his own personal tie to the story of Ender Wiggin.

It’s been four years since I first began writing a screenplay based on the classic novel. I love the book. And I especially love the character of Ender Wiggin. I was drafted into an army myself at 17, and Ender’s journey of self discovery – his battles with authority figures he does not trust and his development as a leader – are themes I strongly relate to.

Here’s a look at Ender’s feet at the edge of the gate to the Battle Room:

We are now well into post production and the famous zero gravity battle room scenes are looking fantastic.

    […]

And today we are looking at battle room scenes that will blow your mind!

What do you guys think? Tomorrow we’ll get to see the whole thing unveiled via Yahoo! Movies, so be sure to keep your eyes on Yahoo tomorrow!

    Games

With the news that a select group of people got to watch the Ender’s Game trailer yesterday at the GAMA Trade Show, Kelly from Ender News and I got together to do Episode 6 of EnderCast.

It was originally titled “Games” after a chapter in the Ender’s Game book, but it quickly became clear that all we were really doing was whining about not getting to see the trailer right now.

In any case, we had a lot of fun with it, so we hope you enjoy. You can listen to Episode 6 here.

Hailee Steinfeld to be Named ‘Female Star of Tomorrow’ at CinemaCon

    Hailee-Steinfeld

CinemaCon has previously announced that they would be bestowing awards upon Harrison Ford (Lifetime Achievement) and Asa Butterfield (Rising Star of 2013) and today it’s been announced that yet another Ender’s Game star will be receiving an award at the convention in April.

Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Petra Arkanian, will receive an award for 2013 Female Star of Tomorrow.

“Having already garnered an Oscar® nomination, not to mention international acclaim for her big screen debut in ‘True Grit,’ Hailee Steinfeld will continue to show audiences this coming year just how amazing a young actress she is with five new films set to hit theaters,” noted Managing Director Mitch Neuhauser. “Can you imagine working opposite Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin in your very first film and under the direction of Joel and Ethan Coen no less? We cannot think of a more exemplary young actress to be named this year’s ‘CinemaCon Female Star of Tomorrow.’”

The award will be given during the CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards on Thursday, April 18 at Caesar’s Palace.

With three cast members receiving awards, it’s starting to sound like the Lionsgate product presentation (to feature several unnamed special guests) may be a great panel for any Ender’s Game fans in attendance.

  • Abigail Breslin: “I love Valentine!”

    Abigail Breslin: “I love Valentine!”

Actress Abigail Breslin, whose new movie The Call is out in theaters this weekend, spoke to Collider about her career transitioning and spoke briefly about Ender’s Game. (Skip to 2:51 for the Ender’s Game part)

You have a number of projects coming out, I mean, Ender’s Game. Is it difficult to play a character that’s pre-existing from such a beloved book?

You know, it’s one of those things where you just have to do your best in how you see the character and hopefully people like it and I love Valentine. I love that character. And it was awesome when I was filming, I actually… I went to a guitar store in New Orleans and the people that worked there they were like, “Oh my God, you’re playing Valentine Wiggin, that’s like one of my favorite characters of all time!” and so a lot of people have been really really nice about it and very supportive so I’ve been lucky that they’ve all seemed really cool about it.

  • VIDEO: Q&A with Orson Scott Card

VIDEO: Q&A with Orson Scott Card

Ender’s Game author Orson Scott Card Q&A from Andy Lindsay on Vimeo.

In a video Q&A produced for Tor Books, author Orson Scott Card talked about his personal favorites in books, movies, authors, and tv shows. A couple of questions centered around Ender’s Game:

With Ender’s Game you’ve written young characters who appeal strongly to adult readers. What’s your secret for engaging both YA and adult readers?

If I knew that I would do it every time because not every book appeals to everybody. But I always try to appeal to everybody. I always aim at the widest possible audience. But the truth is the only difference between young readers and older readers is young readers are patient with one kind of bad writing and older readers are patient with another kind of bad writing. I try not to do bad writing. I try to write as clearly as I can, a story that I care about and believe in and then hope that there are readers that will care about it and believe in it as well.

Why did you decide to use a young boy as the protagonist in a book about a great war between humanity and aliens?

Gotta remember, this started as a short story and I had no plan for a book at the time. The story idea that I had was the Battle Room, a safe place to train people for zero gravity combat, for thinking in zero g. I had that since I was 16 years old, but I had no story and I knew I had no story until I was in my early 20s and I finally realized, no, the time to train people for space combat is not when they’re adults, not when they’re 18 or 19 years old, they have too many gravity bound habits. You gotta grab them when they’re kids. When I realized that they were children, that they would be starting with 6 and 7 year-olds, taking them away from their families, then I had a story. And that’s when I wrote Remember the enemy’s gate is down. But when I started that short story I had no idea that it would ever be a novel. I had no idea how it would end. I didn’t even know that it would ever leave the Battle School and go to another place and involve a wider war so I just used a placeholder alien. The standard giant insect alien from science fiction. It was a MacGuffin, nothing more, so it’s not a book about a war that happens to have a child as the protagonist, it’s a book about a child that happens to have a war as a setting.

Ender’s Game has often been cited as a good book to read by readers who are not fans of science fiction. Why do you think it appeals to both fans and those who do not usually read science fiction?

I think it’s because I’m in the latter category. When I was growing up, science fiction was part of my reading, but only accidentally. I read everything. I was reading classics. I was reading historical fiction, romantic fiction, I read whatever was interesting at the time. A lot of non-fiction as well. But science fiction was valued not because of the genre itself, I never thought of myself as a science fiction reader, I simply loved certain science fiction writers. So I first discovered Heinlein and Norton in junior high library and devoured everything that they had written in book form at that time for the juveniles, the young adult fiction. THen in college I discovered Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov and loved them for the things that they taught me and Larry Niven came the last of all, but those writers are the ones that I think shaped me as a science fiction writer. But, they were never the majority of my reading. I was as likely to be excited about other authors as I was about them. So I think that I bring to writing an awareness of both the inside and the outside. I know enough about science fiction to write, to use the tropes, to use the techniques and methods of science fiction, but then I’m also writing to people like me who are not committed to the field. I’m not writing to insiders. I feel like I’m starting from ground zero. I write for a bare stage, I’m a playwright before I’m a writer of fiction and I write for Shakespeare’s stage. I write for Shakespeare’s audience really, people who expect to have the actor’s words tell them everything that they need to know, so that results in a kind of writing that is very spare. I only tell you what you need to know. I wrote 250 audio plays when I was starting out in my career. This is truly voice alone storytelling, so that only what the character’s say to each other is going to convey the meaning and the setting, everything. So that’s the way that I write. I make sure that all the information is present in the story. I don’t expect you to already bring to it a full knowledge of this or that novel, this or that tradition in science fiction. I make everything self contained and I make it very spare. That’s why people who try to abridge my work despair. There’s nothing there for fluff or decoration. It’s there because it’s functional in the story.

Abigail Breslin: “It was really fun working on the movie.”

    Abigail-Breslin-Call10

Abigail Breslin, who has been doing press all this week for her new movie The Call out this Friday, spoke with Tribute.ca about filming the movie and briefly mentioned Ender’s Game.

You have several movies coming up, but one big one is Ender’s Game.
It was really fun working on that movie. I loved working with Asa Butterfield. It’s fun to meet people and when they ask, “What have you been working on?” and when I say Ender’s Game, they freak out. A lot of people love my character Valentine and they say, “I wish I had a sister like her.” She’s a much-loved character from the book so I hope that I did her justice to the fans out there.
