  • ‘Ender’s Game’ Brings in $1.4M on Halloween

‘Ender’s Game’ Brings in $1.4M on Halloween

    Building0901

Ender’s Game launched the International Fleet’s forces last night on All Hallow’s Eve and Variety is reporting a solid $1.4M in the box office, placing it third for the night behind Gravity at $1.6M and Bad Grandpa at $1.4M.

Paramount’s “Bad Grandpa” posted a similar late-night launch of $1.4 million a week ago and has topped $40 million in its first week. “Gravity” also took in $1.4 million from its first late-night shows while “Oblivion” and “After Earth” both grossed $1 million in their respective preview shows;  “Pacific Rim” grossed an impressive $3.6 million in previews while “Carrie” took in  $725,000.

I actually find it encouraging and impressive that Ender’s Game is doing better on its Thursday than Oblivion, even though Oblivion didn’t impress at the box office much domestically in the end. I wasn’t sure how Halloween would affect things since teens and parents alike would presumably be busy spending time with friends and family doing Halloween activities rather than going to see the movie. We’ll just have to wait and see how the movie does over the coming weekend!

If you saw the movie last night and are feeling a mixture of emotions ranging from disappointed to thrilled, be sure to go see Ender’s Game again. Despite the common complaint that the film is terribly paced, you may just find that a second viewing will let you enjoy the film for what it is. Happy NovEnder 1st!

  • Variety Reports ‘Ender’s Game’ Tracking for a $27m Debut

Variety Reports ‘Ender’s Game’ Tracking for a $27m Debut

    Ender-Mazer-Petra

Variety is reporting that Ender’s Game is currently on track for a $27 million dollar debut in the United States, which is disappointing to say the least when it comes to a film that had a $110M budget excluding marketing costs.

However, the article does go on to say that all might not be lost.

But word of mouth on the Gavin Hood-directed film has been decent (“It’s surprisingly solid,” one source says), while an overseas boost for the sci-fi movie could keep the “Ender’s Game” franchise alive for further installments. There are 12 novels in the “Ender’s Game” series as well as short stories and comics.

It’s tough to say at this point what will happen. November does kick off the holiday movie season, but Ender’s Game is definitely hurt by strong releases later in November including Thor: The Dark World and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. With Gravity still pulling in great numbers, audiences could potentially turn to Ender’s Game to continue their fixation with space and zero-gravity.

What do you think, Launchies? Will audiences give Ender Wiggin a shot or will the box office numbers be down, just like the enemy’s gate?

Ender’s Game Cast Watch #7 – Power of Youth

This week’s cast watch mostly revolves around yesterday’s Variety Power of Youth event. Abigail Breslin was honored as one of five young performers for her involvement in Project Sunshine, a charity for children with disabilities, HIV and other special needs. Here is Abigail with her co-honorees Jake Austin, Quvenzhane Wallis, Nina Dobrev and Tyler Posey.

At the event, Abigail met up with her August: Osage County costar Dermot Mulroney …

… and probably with some of her Ender’s Game buddies, because it seems that Aramis Knight and Khylin Rhambo were also in attendance. Khylin tweeted this “epic” picture of himself with Percy Jackson‘s Brandon T. Jackson and The Maze Runner‘s Dexter Darden.

Aramis met up with some friends and then posed with Tyler Posey (pun intended), tweeting: “Everyone thinks I look like this guy.” I wonder why everyone thinks that … oh wait, BECAUSE YOU DO!

Apparently, Abigail Breslin played matchmaker for Aramis Knight at some point around the time of the event. Hmm, very cryptic.

Valentine Wiggin actress Abigail Breslin is set to star in Peste, a contagion thriller produced by Sheryll Clark (Cloverfield) and financed by IM Global. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she will play a teenage girl whose family is quarantined during a viral epidemic that turns people into monsters. It seems, however, that the quarantined might not be safe after all. Production on Peste is set to begin in September.

  • Lionsgate Holds Film Rights to 12 Ender Novels

Lionsgate Holds Film Rights to 12 Ender Novels

    Lionsgate

In a recent stock analysis story by Variety, it was revealed that Lionsgate holds the rights to all 12 novels in the Ender series.

Warning, the following quote may cause you to gouge out your eyes.

A cult favorite among teen boys and young men since its publication in 1985, it’s been described as “Star Wars meets Harry Potter.”

“While the book on which the film is based is a classic of the genre, we think the film remains a bit of a longshot to achieve breakout success (which we would define as a domestic box office in excess of $125 million) due to some potentially challenging subject matter,” he added.

It’s been previously stated that the budget for Ender’s Game was around $100 million.

Harrigan said in his report that “Ender’s Game” has “distinct fanboy and likely general audience appeal” with Lionsgate possibly responsible for 10% to 15% of the production cost. He also noted Lionsgate has rights to all 12 of Card’s “Ender’s Game” series, adding that not all of them are readily adaptable for film.

I feel I should note that if you haven’t read the book, the original Variety article spoils the ending.

Thanks to fanette for the news tip!

  • Asa Butterfield to Re-team with Chloe Moretz for ‘The White Circus’

Asa Butterfield to Re-team with Chloe Moretz for ‘The White Circus’

    Asa-Chloe

Asa Butterfield will be working with Chloe Moretz again next year as Variety reports that the two young actors are now tied to a film called ‘The White Circus’.

“Circus” is an adventure-romance that takes place on a snowy New Year’s Eve, when a young pilot crashes his plane into a war-torn town on his first mission. There, he falls in love with a beautiful cabaret singer, befriends a talking circus bear and incites the townsfolk to liberate themselves from a despot.

The film will begin shooting in Germany in February 2014.

With schedules for both Asa and Hailee filling up, it makes an Ender’s Game fan start to worry about the stars having time for filming sequels, should there be any…
