I mentioned in my Blu-ray review that part of the featurette showed some cool footage of the kids at Space Camp and Just Jared Jr. has a video preview of that part of the featurette. Watch Gavin get in Aramis Knight’s face to show them what it’s like in the military:

Another “Ender’s Game” Review – Too Much, Too Quick

    EG Simulator Still

(Review by EnderWiggin.net staffer Liz Spencer)

So Crystal has posted her official review, and it’s good stuff.  I was the lucky tag-along who got to have the experience of a lifetime and attend this red carpet premiere with our famous webmaster.  We made it home in the wee hours of the morning, but were absolutely too wired to sleep.  So I present to you now my 3AM ramblings, the unedited review that created itself as I just couldn’t lie down without writing it all out.  I’ll be seeing the movie again tonight, as Summit Entertainment has been kind enough to provide us with quite a few tickets to an advanced screening here in Honolulu (if you haven’t asked Crystal for tickets, there’s still time!).  So it’s quite possible that my opinions might change, as tends to happen any second time ’round.  But here is my initial reaction for your review.

    ———————————————–

I’ll start right off by saying that I was not as horribly disappointed by this film as I feared I would be. However, I was also not as pleasantly surprised as I hoped I would be, especially after reading reviews from several fellow fans who kindled in my mind a small fire of hope that all my worries would be for naught.

It was a good film, but it was not a great film, and what makes it so frustrating is that all the elements were in place to create what truly could have been a marvelous adaptation.

It was just too dang fast. All the key plot pieces were there, and they were actually done rather well. But it didn’t matter, because the story took off at a sprint and never realized that it should have been pacing itself for a marathon. Or at least a 5K.

If I had not read the book, and went into this story completely blind, I would be asking several very important questions right now. First, I would not for a minute buy the plot. So we’re training kids to command our entire international fleet, protect our civilization from imminent destruction, and somehow they are both capable and qualified to do this after about six months in space playing laser tag?

Condensing the timeline was a killer. It took away from the authenticity of the story. To those naysayers who have complained over the years that the story was totally impractical anyway (and I bite my thumb at them) it was at least more plausible under the original terms. Taking children – real children, not adolescents – removing them from their homes, and conditioning them under the strictest of environments for half their natural lives, one can appreciate the depth of their training, their study, and their practice.

Of course this was also the biggest plot element that had to be revised. And this is entirely understandable, and why I have always known that any film adaptation of this book will never do it justice. Because unless they make a 20-episode miniseries (which I think would actually work fantastically) there is no way to chart the time and the growth that must occur. But I guess I was just hoping that Gavin Hood would have made it work better.

It’s not good when even I didn’t believe that Ender was capable of what they were asking him to do. From what I saw, he showed up at Battle School, spent two days as a launchie, got transferred to Salamander, was in one battle, got promoted to commander, was in another battle, fought Bonzo, quit, decided to come back the next day, flew to Command School, met his army, and was ready to conquer the home planet in like a week. While there are several “Dear Valentine”letters that are meant to inform us of the true passage of time, we just don’t see enough of his teaching, his training, and his tactical leadership to understand why Graff seems to think he’s that big of a deal.

And here’s where this all really sucks. Because all of these individual plot segments were actually done pretty well. If I was just watching them as clips, I’d think, “Oh, that was cool, I can’t wait to see the rest of it.” But there is no rest of it. There was no pacing, no waiting, no ten seconds to catch your breath and actually establish a scene. I didn’t have time to grow to care about Ender, really care about him. And again, if I hadn’t read the book, I don’t think I would have appreciated his internal struggle. I knew what he was supposed to be thinking because I KNEW what he was supposed to be thinking.

And again, this sucks. Because the performances were great. I actually have no qualms with any of the actors. Asa Butterfield was magnificent. Once I accepted a 15-year old Ender (who could legitimately pass for 13) he did embody the character. If he had been given more time, more TIME to reflect and study, watch those Bugger vids and monologue a little, I would have been able to truly appreciate and believe in his story. Harrison Ford was also good, and had several excellent lines, but also suffered from a sheer lack of time. Ben Kingsley was great (I don’t know what some of those reviewers are whining about), and all the other kids were good, but given so little to do they seemed merely extraneous. They tried to build up Bean, but he never got a chance to do more than act as comedic relief (which he did very well). Moises Arias (who I was terribly, terribly worried would bring down this entire thing himself) actually made a convincing Bonzo. Unfortunately, the theater was laughing every time he was on screen. Because it WAS funny that he was so little and trying to be so tough, and while he did a good job, you never felt that Ender was in any danger at all because all he would have to do is stiff-arm the guy and he’d never get near him.

Time. It needed more time. I’m hoping for an extended edition DVD release, but even that won’t fix some of the intrinsic rushing of these scenes. So in the end, I give it a passing grade. Of course the visuals were awesome (I just realized that I haven’t even mentioned them), but what I wanted was the story. The struggle. The journey. This cast and crew took on a most difficult project and performed admirably, and I freely acknowledge the near-impossibility of making it work just right. I guess I just hoped for a miracle. Thank you, Gavin, for all that you did. Your heart was truly in it– our visions just differ is all.

    Ender’s Game Cast Watch #12

    Hey guys,

it’s been two weeks, and while the cast have not been overly busy on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, we still have tons of news and pretty pictures to share with you.

Let’s start with Hailee Steinfeld, who has been by far the busiest of the young cast, having signed on to not one but two new projects in the last couple of weeks. First, she is going to play teen assasin Megan in Kyle Newman’s Barely Lethal alongsinde Samuel L. Jackson and Jessica Alba. Second, she’s set to appear as Vince Vaughn’s daughter in his adaptation of Term Life, a graphic novel by A.J. Lieberman and Nick Thornborrow. Not to forget all those other projects she’s either currently working on, like Three Days to Kill and The Homesman, or recently finished shooting, like Loveship, Hateship and The Keeping Room. No wonder German GLAMOUR editor Wolfgang Hertel calls her “A Girl for All Occasions.”

    12_hailee_glamourcollage

Hailee’s latest project, the new adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, just premiered in LA. Here she is on the red carpet with “Romeo” Douglas Booth and BFF Taylor Swift.

    12_hailee_redcarpetcollage

I like the dress. It proves again that Hailee Steinfeld is quite the fashionista. Which is probably why she made time to attend several events during New York Fashion Week, such as the Donna Karen 25th Birthday Bash, the Estee Lauder “Modern Muse” Fragrance Launch or the Calvin Klein Spring 2014 After-Party. I don’t know about you, but while I’m not sure about the Donna Karen one I’m partial to the Calvin Klein outfit.

    12_hailee_fashionweek

Hailee herself has often admitted that fashion is hugely important for her. So too in the October issue of ASOS, the magazine published by the online fashion shop of the same name. E-Online published five shots ahead of time, along with a little article. Check them out HERE! (Update: More shots and a making-of video HERE at the Daily Mail Online.)

Speaking of fashion magazines: Several pictures of Abigail Breslin appear in digital magazine ContentMode’s current issue #11, together with a video in which Abigail talks about August: Osage County, Ender’s Game, and her fashion philosophy. Check out the photos and the video HERE!

    12_abigail_contentmode

Since then, Abigail has been keeping busy. She did a number of interviews recently to promote her various new and upcoming movies. She talked to ShockTillYouDrop about Haunter and Zombieland, discussed the terrifying experience of being locked in a trunk in The Call with DIY, and chatted to ALLURE about this and that. And according to Comingsoon.net, she has just started working on her newest movie, zombie thriller Maggie with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

    12_abigail_allurearnold

While it’s not exactly a new movie, Khylin Rhambo also had news to share. He recently booked a guest role in the cop show Ironside!

    12_khylin_gueststar_1109

Conor Carroll, on the other hand, has been walking down memory lane, sharing THIS awesome little ad with the world. Looks like little Conor already had the bully role down pat. Otherwise he’s been keeping busy getting into boxing and Facebook. Check out his new account HERE!

    12_conor_boxing

And since we are speaking of new social media accounts: Moises Arias finally decided to share his awesome photography on Tumblr. Here are a few examples of his work. Go check out his Tumblr 490tx for the rest HERE.

Finally, let’s briefly talk about the older cast: Ben Kingsley has joined the cast of Learning to Drive. Harrison Ford will receive the Hollywood Career Award at the 17th annual Hollywood Film Awards. He’s also keeping up the Han Solo act by angering leading politicians. Viola Davis appears on the cover of the October issue of ESSENCE. You can see a video of the shoot HERE. And while I couldn’t find the entire article online, several online news outlets have published parts of her interview with the magazine: Check them out HERE, HERE and HERE.

    Ender’s Game Cast Watch #10

    Hey peeps,

I’m a little early this week because I’m leaving tomorrow for a week and a half to visit my family, but there’s plenty to report even now, since the Ender’s Game cast has been busy.

Asa Butterfield continues to film his new movie X Plus Y. The film team just relocated to Taipei/Taiwan, which seems to have made everyone more photo-happy.

    10_asa_taiwanjourney
    10_asa_journey_collage

    10_asa_Taipei_collage

There’s probably something in the water in Taipei, something that makes you cross-eyed and paralyzes your tongue. Or maybe it’s those 34 hours without any sleep that Asa Butterfield was talking about on Twitter. Anyway, it looks like tumblr users lovezucks and ceolwaerc, whose stalking abilities far exceed mine, have found the first images of Jo Yang, who plays Asa’s love interest in X Plus Y.

While in Taipei, Asa apparently also got his GCSE results. Not bad. I wonder if he is going to continue to A-levels. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

    10_asa_GSCEs

Asa isn’t the only one currently concerned with school stuff. Suraj Partha has been studying for his SATs.

    10_suraj_SAT

I’m sure he is going to ace that, but if he doesn’t, he could always become a photographer. Look at this beautiful picture he took during a recend road trip.

Meanwhile, Aramis Knight has been enjoying his celebrity status as well as the California sun. Last Thursday, Aramis attended WWE & E! Entertainment’s “Superstars for Hope” event.

    10_aramis_WWE_pic

More recently, he has been planning spring break with Khylin Rhambo. According to twitter user aramis_bean (as retweeted by Aramis Knight), this is what that’s gonna look like:

(Apropos Kings of Summer, Moises Arias’ Kings of Summer is out in the UK this week, as Moises let us know via Twitter.)

And just today, ETOnline published Aramis Knight’s personal ‘Shredding’ skateboarding playlist. Says Aramis

Skateboarding and music go hand in hand. There’s nothing like jamming out to my favorite tunes while cruising in my neighborhood or local skatepark.

    Check out the playlist HERE!

Finally, adult cast members Andrea Powell (Theresa Wiggin) and Han Soto (Graff’s aide) are involved in new projects. Andrea is shooting a Christmas Special with Andy Garcia, while Han is filming a Left Behind remake with Nicholas Cage.

‘Ender’s Game: Battle School’ Board Game: Hi-Res Image

Last week we told you about Ender’s Game: Battle School, a board game to be released by Cryptozoic. Now we have a hi-res version of the image Cryptozoic is using to advertise their new game. You can even read the words on the cards! Click the image for the hi-res version.

    EG board game hi-res

In case you don’t remember, here is the description of the game again:

Ender’s Game: Battle School is a two-player game set in the zero-gravity arena of the International Fleet’s Battle School.  Players take the role of either Ender Wiggin and the Dragon Team or Bonzo Madrid and the Salamander Team, and then use Commander cards with special abilities (some for the whole team, some that only help the commander) to attempt to capture the other team’s gates or freeze opposing team players with laser-light guns.  The player who completes either of the goals first (capturing all the gates or freezing the opposing commander) wins.

Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld Reveal Behind-the-Scenes Tidbits

    hailee-steinfeld-asa-butterfield-enders-game

Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld sat down with Moviefone (as did Harrison Ford) to chat a bit about what it was like to film Ender’s Game. They talk about funny moments, the professional atmosphere on set, and the pranks they all (including, it seems, the adults) played on each other while filming. And guess what: the Ender’s Game slang from the books made it into the movie!

My favorite part of the interview is Hailee’s recollection of a prank Gavin Hood played on her:

At the end of the film, one of the cast members, Moises Arias, who plays Bonzo Madrid, had to shave his hair for the ending scene. You know, it’s one of those things where you’re OK with it because you have to do it, but it’s also like, you know… it’s a big thing, right? So Moises handled it very well, but you could see he was a little, you know, taken aback by looking at himself in the mirror and this drastic change. And Asa and I walked on set and Gavin turns around and has a black eye. My heart dropped. I was like, “What just happened?” And he goes, “I told him. I told him that he could take it out on me because I made him shave his head. And I was literally, like, crying. I was like, “Moises would never do that. What’s happening?” And then they were like, “Just kidding! It’s makeup!”

    Ender’s Game Cast Watch #4

Another week of me stalking the Ender’s Game cast on the nets has come to a close. Let’s see what the kids have been up to.

Asa Butterfield has been all kinds of busy. Let’s start with the picture that finally made him Instagram-famous (and I wonder why):

    4asa_boat20130704

Looks like that was the last day in Greece, before he had to return to London for his Prom!

    4asa_prom_20130705

Also, in preparation of his appearance at the Ender’s Game panel on Thursday, July 18, Asa went shopping at Carnaby Street, London. Will he wow you all with his fashion sense?

    4asa_fashion

Personally, I’m slightly flashed by the pattern mix. But I’m sure that’s just me.

Speaking of Comic Con, Aramis Knight has confirmed that he will be signing autographs! He even gave a tentative date! Watch out for him on Saturday at the Summit booth! After Jimmy Pinchak, Aramis is the second non-panelist announcing that he is going to SDCC, but Khylin Rhambo, Brandon Soo Hoo, Conor Carroll and Caleb Thaggard are rumored to be there as well.  While the kids are getting excited for the big event, Harrison Ford seems to have the time and leisure for a trip to Peru.

Hailee Steinfeld has been caught up in other projects. Nevertheless she had the time to tweet about her new magazine cover as well as an interview she did about her upcoming film Romeo and Juliet. Watch it below!

    4hailee_magazine_20130704

Moises Arias has a new film … or rather, a video. He appears in his friend Willow Smith’s new music video “Summer Fling”.

Finally, Suraj Partha seems to have a little less time for fun stuff this summer, as he is studying for his SAT! I’m sure he will ace it, though, just like he just aced his AP EURO class (according to his facebook). He did, however, have the time to post a video of himself singing and playing the piano in Paris. So romantic!

VIDEO: Moises Arias on Ender’s Game

In their interview with Moises Arias at the Despicable Me 2 premiere, DesdeHollywood asked Moises about his experience filming Ender’s Game. Here is what he had to say:

Reporter: How was it to work on Ender’s Game with Harrison Ford, a movie that will catapult you into stardom in the entire world?

Moises: Ahm, I hope that people will really see the variety of roles that I’m doing, and that they’ll start to see the different kinds of acting that I can do. I liked it a lot, and Ender’s Game gave me a big opportunity – to be an antagonist. Kings of Summer is a comedy and Ender’s Game is solely drama. There is a very big chance that if people like it it will be one of the biggest things in my career.

Many thanks to Fernanda (@franiahs on Twitter) for the translation!

As usual, the young Ender’s Game cast has been really active on Twitter this week, with Abigail Breslin taking home the “Most Obsessive Tweeter” award with 33 original tweets since Monday.

Moises Arias has been busy promoting his new film The Kings of Summer, which was released this week. He attended a Q & A at the Landmark Theater in LA on Wednesday. Check out Twitter user Devan Abharis photograph of the event (as retweeted by Moises himself).

Moises also spoke to Papermag about The Kings of  Summer. He briefly mentions Ender’s Game, saying:

It was honestly one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had. It was inspiring to see the professionalism. The cinematography! The special effects look amazing. I’m excited. I’ve gotten to work with the most amazing actors and the most amazing child actors right now.

Hailee Steinfeld has been spending her time filming the Civil War drama The Keeping Room (with Sam Worthington) and photographing cows in Romania.

Asa Butterfield has finished school and has left London for warmer pastures as well, spending his summer vacation in Greece.

Since it’s been a pretty slow couple of days, I decided to stalk the Ender’s Game cast’s twitter and facebook accounts in the hopes of turning up some interesting tidbits. And guess what, the kids have been BUSY! Well, all except Asa Butterfield, who has apparently decided to spend the next week or so in front of his computer.

He did, however, hang out with Suraj Partha only a couple of days ago, when Suraj visited London on his trip to Europe. Hailee Steinfeld, on the other hand, stayed in the States to spend some days in Hollywood being honored by Max Mara.  And Moises Arias just returned from a week of roughin’ it in Cabo San Lucas.

Moises Arias Calls ‘Ender’s Game’ a Memorable Experience

Moises Arias talked with The Hollywood Reporter about The Kings of Summer and Ender’s Game, which is out on a wider release today and briefly talked about how to portray a character from a book. “You read the book, you read the script, they’re two different art forms.”

He also had great things to say about his time on set. “That was probably one of the most memorable experiences for me. I do believe that I’m going to be very different from what people were predicting, but I think it’s going to be a different flavor to what Bonzo is. I’m just happy that I got the opportunity.”
