PHOTO: Graff and Mazer Rackham Face Off with Ender Wiggin

Although we just posted an image that is from Entertainment Weekly’s Fall Movie Preview, turns out that was the bonus tablet image. The image above, which shows Mazer Rackham looking at Ender while Graff gives Ender an angry look, is the actual image from the print issue on stands today. (look for the Anchorman 2 issue)

In the brief article, Gavin Hood talks about how when he told his visual effects supervisor what he wanted for the Battle Room, “his eyes nearly popped out of his head”.

HUGE thanks to my friend Michelle for helping me view this on her iPad!

Here’s a scan of a new image of Ender in the Battle Room in his Salamander Army flash suit. This image appeared in the print edition of Entertainment Weekly’s op-ed piece Pop Culture’s Big Gay Panic. If you’re not sure which issue it is, it’s the one with The Walking Dead on the cover.

Thanks to Ender News for the tip.

PHOTO: Ender and Petra at the Gate

    Ender-Petra

Thanks to a slideshow put up by Entertainment Weekly for their Comic Con 2013 preview, we’ve got a new look at Ender (Asa Butterfield, right) and Petra (Hailee Steinfeld, left) holding hands as they’re about to jump into the Battle Room.

The photo gives us a better look at the flash guns, as can be seen on Petra’s hip, but it also brings up an inevitable question: are Petra and Ender a “thing” in the movie?

In the book, Petra acts more like a tough older sister to Ender when he first joins Salamander Army under Bonzo. But Ender was around 7 or 8 at that point while in the book he’ll be around 10 or 11. When we first saw Petra in the trailer, she was giving a sly smile to Ender.

Now in this photo we see them holding hands as they get ready to go into the Battle Room, something that Ender has presumably already done himself because we’ve seen him in the Battle Room wearing launchy colors. So what do you guys think? Do Petra and Ender have a different type of connection in the film? And if they did, how do you feel about it?

EW.com Exclusively Reveals First Look at Ben Kingsley as Mazer Rackham in ‘Ender’s Game’

    Mazer-Rackham

In anticipation of the trailer’s global debut next week on May 7, Summit/Lionsgate has given EW.com the exclusive first look at Sir Ben Kingsley as Mazer Rackham.

As many book fans know, the character of Mazer is actually a book twist, but the film doesn’t seem to be going this route since Mazer is mentioned in the official synopsis.

In the near future, a hostile alien race (called the Formics) have attacked Earth. If not for the legendary heroics of International Fleet Commander, Mazer Rackham (Ben Kingsley), all would have been lost. In preparation for the next attack, the highly esteemed Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford) and the International Military are training only the best young children to find the future Mazer. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield), a shy, but strategically brilliant boy is pulled out of his school to join the elite.

Arriving at Battle School, Ender quickly and easily masters increasingly difficult war games, distinguishing himself and winning respect amongst his peers. Ender is soon ordained by Graff as the military’s next great hope, resulting in his promotion to Command School. Once there, he’s trained by Mazer Rackham, himself, to lead his fellow soldiers into an epic battle that will determine the future of Earth and save the human race.

EW spoke to Ben Kingsley a bit about the role.

Director and co-writer Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) was key, according to Kingsley, as was the  make-up and  costume team working with Kingsley to breathe life into the half-Maori war hero, who is an almost mythical presence in Orson Scott Card’s 1980s bestseller.

“In the script, which I think is beautifully written, what come across is the authority and mystery,” Kingsley said of Rackham, a man who saved earth once and may have to do it again. “There’s quite a lot said about him in the story  before you see him — by the recruits and by his fellow officers — and that’s useful as far as preparations.”

  • New Quote: Gavin Hood on Ender

New Quote: Gavin Hood on Ender

    Gavin-Hood

Although I haven’t confirmed this yet myself since my new Entertainment Weekly issue hasn’t yet arrived, the mobile version of the January 18 issue included a new quote from director Gavin Hood about Ender Wiggin.

Ender grows into a powerful (but deeply conflicted) leader whose every action is monitored. “He is a victim of adult manipulation,” says director Gavin Hood, “but also a victim of his own ego.”

Sounds like Gavin Hood has a really great grasp of the depth of character of Ender. Let’s hope he’s able to take his interpretations of the character and translate them accurately on screen!
