Download ‘Ender’s Game’ Pumpkin Stencils for Halloween

Anyone who knows me knows that I get a little crazy around Halloween, especially when it comes to pumpkins. Years ago I saw what you can do and began breaking my back creating elaborate pumpkins for my myself and my family.

Eventually I started realizing that carving a ridiculously hard design on a real pumpkin is devastatingly hard work and depressing since pumpkins in Hawaii rot in about a day or two. Eventually I started doing foam pumpkins for the special designs, but I do still carve real pumpkins for the kids.

This Halloween, I’ve made some Ender’s Game pumpkin stencils for you guys to download and try out. Later this week I will be releasing the full details for the October 31st Countdown to NovEnder contest, which will of course be my favorite type of contest all year: an Ender’s Game Pumpkin Carving Contest!

Here’s a sample of what they look like!

  • FANSITE EXCLUSIVE: ‘Ender’s Army’ – First Clip from ‘Ender’s Game’

FANSITE EXCLUSIVE: ‘Ender’s Army’ – First Clip from ‘Ender’s Game’

    Ender's-Army32

EnderWiggin.net is very happy to be one of the Ender’s Game fansites to exclusively debut the very first clip from Ender’s Game, now 27 days from release in the United States.

Watch below in the clip titled ‘Ender’s Army’ as Colonel Hyrum Graff of the International Fleet’s Battle School discusses with esteemed student Ender Wiggin his impressive record at the school and what’s in store for someone who is both excelling and struggling under Commander Bonzo Madrid of Salamander Army.

What do you guys think of the clip? I loved that they included the bit about the uniforms, which is pretty close to the scene in the book!

“I’ve never heard of Dragon Army,” Ender said.

“That’s because there hasn’t been a Dragon Army in four years. We discontinued the name because there was a superstition about it. No Dragon Army in the history of the Battle School ever won even a third of its games. It got to be a joke.”

“Well, why are you reviving it now?”

“We had a lot of extra uniforms to use up.”

For some reason I also loved the hum in the background, lending to the fact that they’re in space. I also cracked up that Graff seems to slouch. Perhaps that’s their substitute for the big belly?

Listen to EnderCast Episode 33.5 below to hear Kelly and I watching the clip for the first time!

Ender’s Game is in theaters November 1st.

io9 Reveals 360° Tour of Dragon Army Barracks and Graff’s Office

    Graffs-Office

i09 is giving Launchies around the world a chance to take 360° tours of two Ender’s Game sets: the Dragon Army barracks and Graff’s office. We’ve seen Graff standing in his office and we know that behind that wall is the Battle Room, where Graff can watch battles. Funnily enough, it looks like there’s a doorway to a shaft right above his desk. Perfect for snoopy little Bean-like soldiers. 😉

    Dragon-Barracks

The Dragon Army barracks has DRAGON on the floor of the entryway, just like what we saw in the still MTV released yesterday of Ender and Petra entering Salamander’s barracks.

Thanks to @SpeedBrkr for the tip.

Update: We’ve embedded the tours below thanks to IF-BattleSchool.com.

Ain’t It Cool News on the Rebirth of Dragon Army

    Dragon-Soldier

Ain’t It Cool News has posted their set visit report and in it they provide us with the scene where Ender is assigned Commander of Dragon Army.

“[Y]ou have a habit of upsetting your commander.”

Ender replies “I find it hard to respect someone just because he outranks me, sir.” At this, Graff leans back in his chair, giving Ender his full attention, rocking back and forth slightly.

“That puts you in a difficult position, doesn’t it? You don’t like taking orders from Bonzo… perhaps you’d prefer to give them,” says Graff slyly, kind of like a parent about to unveil a Christmas present. Ender is confused. “Sir?”

Graff: “How would you like your own army? Dragon Army.”

Ender: “Sir, I’ve never heard of Dragon Army.”

Graff: “We discontinued the name four years ago. No Dragon Army ever won a battle.”

Ender: “Why not a new name, sir?”

Graff: “Because we already have the uniforms.”

Ender: “Who will be in this army?”

Graff: “Misfits, like yourself. Outcasts who might just be brilliant with the right commander.”

It should be noted that this is his transcript of the original scene he saw and that later takes may have changed it. Still a cool look into Ender’s promotion into Dragon Army, though! He also mentions the scene that we see in the trailer that Khylin Rhambo confirmed on EnderCast was with him and Hailee Steinfeld.

I didn’t spend much time in the Battle Room set, but I did see Hailee Steinfeld film a scene with Khylin Rhambo, who plays Dink Meeker. It’s one of Ender’s gambits where one person from his army is sacrificed and used as a human shield. In this case Dink is frozen into place and Petra (Steinfeld) takes his flash gun and fires John Woo style as Dink hugs her, protecting her from enemy fire.

In order to get this shot they had to get on a weird little contraption that the wire team called the lollipop. Imagine a bar stool seat attached to a long stick with one affixed wire attached at the middle. Hailee sat on the seat, Dink on the bar, his arms over her shoulders and her legs wrapped around his waist with both her arms shot out under his shoulders firing away as they float away from the enemy gate.

Dink whispers “Did you get him?” Petra smiles and says, “Oh yeah.” He’s looking behind her and sees their momentum is taking them on a crash course with a star and they both cringe, anticipating the impact.

Read his whole report here, including an amusing interaction with Harrison Ford.

  • Ender’s Game Battle School Cupcakes

    Ender’s Game Battle School Cupcakes

    Ender-Cupcakes6

Happy Monday, Launchies! This past weekend I got motivated to do some Ender’s Game cupcakes. The army logos are great for doing fan artsy stuff and since I do a lot of these kinds of cupcake things for my other blog Fictional Food, it was really only a matter of time until I tried to tackle these.

And for those of you wondering where Leopard and Centipede is, just go look at those logos and tell me if you think it’s humanly possible to cut those things out of fondant. 😉

To make the logos, I rolled black fondant really thin and then let it dry for a bit to make it easier to cut. I’d printed out the logos on paper and cut them out first. For Phoenix and Griffin, I used a photo from the Ender’s Game Experience I found online, since my good photos of the logos got eaten on my corrupted SD card.

    Ender-Cupcakes1

After that, I laid them over the frosting and started cutting with an X-Acto knife. Sadly, the paper got stuck to Phoenix and Salamander, which is why those don’t look too good.

    Ender-Cupcakes2

Here are the logos all cut out and drying. The white stuff is powdered sugar to keep it from sticking to the bottom.

Since I only had Halloween cupcake cups, they would have looked kind of dopey from the sides, so I made cupcake wrappers. I first did these kinds of wrappers for my Effie Trinket cupcakes and they worked really well for these too!

    Ender-Cupcakes3

If you want to try wrapping your own cupcakes, I have the wrappers in PDF form for you to download. They may need a little trimming and you’ll also need to leave a little tab on one end to glue/tape together.

    Ender-Cupcakes4

Here’s the side of the Dragon cupcake. I put book and movie quotes on the opposite sides of each of them.

    Ender-Cupcakes5

I don’t think Graff likes me insinuating he’s a “rat” by putting him on the Rat Army cupcake…

    Ender-Cupcakes8

Here’s the Salamander cupcake. It’s still got little bits of sugar on it and his poor tail fell off. It was too hard to separate the belly sections, so I just cut into the frosting and it turned out fine. To make this color I used green fondant mixed with gobs of yellow and orange color gel.

    Ender-Cupcakes10

Griffin Army cupcake! The ear was hard to cut, but I like how it came out overall. I should have made it bigger though. This was just straight green, nice and easy.

    Ender-Cupcakes11

As I mentioned earlier, the Phoenix got a little dinged up. I didn’t pat enough sugar onto it and the paper got stuck to the frosting. The color was made by mixing blue and green fondant.

    Ender-Cupcakes12

Rat Army cupcake. I thought the whiskers and toes would be impossible, but they weren’t too bad. I just used basic red fondant for this. If you’re wondering why I have so many colors, it’s from making cakes like this Mario one for my son and this Hello Kitty one for my daughter. I just have a fully stocked fondant pantry!

    Ender-Cupcakes13

Here’s Asp, which was pretty hard to cut. This is one of my favorite logos. Totally reminds me of the auryn from Neverending Story.

    Ender-Cupcakes9

And finally, here’s the Dragon. Still my favorite design! Tonight I’ll take some more photos and then let my kids fight over which cupcake they get. This morning my son was giving me a hard time because I always freak out with them touching my stuff before I get to do photos and video. He was barely touching one with his pinky and taunting me, saying, “Ooohh look Mommy, look look! I’m touching the cupcake, oh no!!!”

The kid needs some sitting on. This is on the agenda for tonight. I took video so you guys can see the wrappers better and will post that later this week.

Here’s one last photo with the poster:

    Ender-Cupcakes7

I could go into a number of dorky lines for these.

    “The enemy’s cake is down.”

“We need cakes like yours, Ender.”

“You will be the one to frost mankind.”

I’m sure Graff would have gotten appropriately fat if I’d been supplying these to him at Battle School.

  • Dragon Shirts Added to EnderNet Cafepress Store

Dragon Shirts Added to EnderNet Cafepress Store

As some of you are aware, I’m hoping to show up at Comic Con wearing a Battle School uniform. Sure, I’m way past the ripe age of recruitment, but it’s all in fun and what better fun is there to have hanging out in that epic Ender’s Game Experience wearing a Battle School outfit?

Part of the costume involves getting my hands on a bright orange t-shirt. And rather than just go down to Target to get one, I decided to get one from Cafepress. At first I was going to buy the THIRD shirt, but then thought it’d be funnier if I made a Dragon related one.

    Dragon

If you’re not sure about the reference, it’s a modification of the jeering calls made when Dragon Army shows up late to battle. The army waiting inside began to call, “Your ass is draggin’! Your ass is Dragon!”

The shirt is available in both Men’s and Women’s sizes.

  • PHOTOS: Bonzo, Dap, and a Dragon Soldier

PHOTOS: Bonzo, Dap, and a Dragon Soldier

Along with the re-launch of I.F. Sentinel and the three really cool propaganda posters came some new imagery, some of it better looks at key characters.

    Dap

First up, we have Dap, aka “Mom” to the Launchies. He’s sporting an IF Hat and wearing the teacher uniform. This photo doesn’t really do justice to how big Nonso Anozie is, but it’s still great to have a better look at him. We previously only caught a slight glimpse of him in the trailer.

    Dragon-Soldier

Next there’s a nice close-up image of the back of a Dragon Army soldier and we get a much better look at part of the flash suit. We can see that they wear something connected to their suit over their heads and the helmet goes on over that. Also, any guesses who this is? Since there’s a wall of stars in front of him, my guess is Bean!

    Bonzo

Last, but not least, we get a great first head-on look at Bonzo Madrid, standing in what could possibly be a bathroom with some of his fellow Salamander Army soldiers. He definitely looks intimidating, is it enough to convince you that he is out for blood? One can certainly understand how a look like that can scare off an extra on set!

Check out all the new stories and images on IF Sentinel.

  • DIY Battle School Nails

    DIY Battle School Nails

Even with two kids and more blogs than I know what to do with, I clearly have nothing better to do than to think up ways to show what a ridiculous fangirl I can be. Last week, while trying to figure out a way to save money on those silly little stickers my daughter is always begging me to buy her, I decided to look up whether you can print your own nail decals. Turns out, you definitely can.

I ordered a set and then the Ender’s Game part of my brain started churning and this happened:

    Battle-School-Nails1

I made teeny ones for smaller fingers and bigger ones for thumbs, with the little ones being 1/4 inch and the thumbs being 1/2 inch.

    Battle-School-Nails2

The next step is to coat the printout with clear nail polish, though this became tricky as the ink began to run with strokes. I had to dab and will have to look into just getting an acrylic spray for the whole sheet. I waited for it to dry and painted my nails in various Battle School colors: orange, blue, red, green.

    Battle-School-Nails3

Once they were dry I cut the edges off. Actually, I got lazy on the second hand and left the corners, but you’ll be able to see why this is a bad idea.

    Battle-School-Nails4

Next, submerge it in a bit of warm water. Once the paper backing is soaked, you can remove it from the water to a paper towel and gently peel it off the paper.

    Battle-School-Nails5

Here’s the tiny little decal ready to put on a nail.

    Battle-School-Nails6

Flatten the decal down and then paint over with clear polish.

    Battle-School-Nails7

Here’s my right hand and you can see the corners on the three small army nails. Definitely take the time to cut the corners off! And yes, I know, my nails are kind of sad looking. I only just recently grew them out after like 30 years and my daughter’s constant scolding. I don’t know why but I had the hardest time with the IF decals and they both went on horribly crooked.

    Battle-School-Nails8

My first attempt on my left hand was ridiculous. I made the Rat and Asp upside down, but the Dragon looked okay. All in all, it’s pretty close to what I’d envisioned. Petra Arkanian would scream in horror, no doubt.

I’m hoping to take the thumbnail sizes with me to Comic Con and anyone who can find me while I’m waiting in the Hall H line can get a Battle School thumbnail. If you’re willing to give me a thumbs up pose for the EnderWiggin.net Instagram, that’d be sweet!
