VIDEO: Gavin Hood/Bob Orci On Staying True to the Book

Entertainment site The Verge just uploaded their coverage of Ender’s Game at San Diego Comic Con. They spoke briefly with Asa and Hailee outside the Ender’s Game Experience before they sat down with director Gavin Hood and producer Bob Orci to discuss the making of the movie. Watch them talk about getting involved in the project, financing the movie, their devotion to stay true to both the “cool stuff” and the “cerebral” side of the book, and why the teaser trailer is so heavy on CGI.

VIDEO: Hailee and Asa On Geeking Out On Set

More videos from Comic-Con are being uploaded every day on youtube and various entertainment sites. Among them are a bunch of flash interviews with Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld, which apparently were all held in the same room in the same time slot. Watch interviews by Hitflix and MoviesDotComOfficial HERE and HERE!

Personaly, I love this one with CraveOnline because it asks some nerdy questions about the coolest sets and moments during the filming of Ender’s Game and how hard it was not to geek out around SciFi movie icon Harrison Ford. Watch Asa and Hailee having loads of fun answering those questions below.

    THE MOUSE WILL BE THERE!

Finally some information on whether or not and in what way the Mind Game will be featured in the Ender’s Game Movie. Good News: the mouse is most likely going to be there! In an interview with Cinemablend‘s Kelly West (the same interview she quoted from when writing about the question of violence in the movie; see our earlier post HERE), writer/director Gavin Hood said:

We did motion capture, put on suits, ran around the room. They filmed it in a virtual world. Once you’ve captured that motion you can film what you captured digitally and then we handed that off to an amazing animation company in Barcelona, who’ve done the most beautiful work. Obviously, we did a lot of drawings and how’s it going to be? And drawings of the mouse and all those things, but it is a shorter version than in the book, because the whole story of the book is compressed into about a one year period.

The rest of the interview evolves around the adaptation of the book, including questions about how much of the book’s violence will be shown in the film, how Ender’s narrative voice is translated into the medium of film, and what a possible sequel will depend on. Read the entire article HERE!

    Harrison Ford at CinemaCon 2013.

Finally a decently meaty interview with Harrison Ford about the Ender’s Game movie! Ford talks to Quint from Aint It Cool News about filming, Gavin Hood as a director, working with kids in general and Asa Butterfield in particular, and his acting choices (with only a little bit of Han Solo and Indiana Jones thrown in at the end). Some favorite parts are:

Harrison Ford: I’m also trying to provide the director with options in the cutting room. […] If a certain scene had to be left out for time purposes or something, he would have options, which would allow elements of character to be expressed in that scene.

Quint: [Asa Butterfield] came across as someone who wears his heart on his sleeve. He didn’t seem like he was putting up any barriers, if you know what I mean.

Harrison Ford: He’s there. That’s a wonderful thing to find when you’re acting with somebody… that they actually fucking show up.

  • Ender’s Game Cast Watch #5

    Ender’s Game Cast Watch #5

This past week had half the cast in a flurry over San Diego Comic Con. It looks like almost everone is attending!

    5suraj_sdcc_201307105brandon_sdcc_20130708

According to the official Comic Con page, Suraj and Aramis as well as Jimmy Pinchak, Conor Carroll, and Cameron Gaskins are going to sign autographs on Saturday around noon (drawing of line tickets is around 9am), while the Thursday panelists (sans Harrison Ford) are scheduled to sign on Thursday morning.  Good planning, Comic Con! It’s not as if the Ender’s Game fans will be waiting in line in front of Hall H at that time!

What I find interesting is that Brandon Soo Hoo, Khylin Rhambo and Moises Arias (both unconfirmed) seem to be going to San Diego, but aren’t part of the official line-up. What’s with that? Are they just going to hang out around the premises? Or is there some secret project they are involved in? (Ender’s Game Experience, anyone?)

Hailee Steinfeld and Asa Butterfield are also preparing for the big event. But while for Hailee things are going according to plan, Asa had to endure a few setbacks (read tweets from bottom to top) before he arrived safely in LA this morning.

    5asa_LA2_20130715
According to his Twitter, he is going to meet up with his friend and Hugo co-star Cloe Moretz while he’s there.

Earlier last week, when things were still a bit less hectic, Asa enjoyed a beautiful day in Sheffield, while Aramis went for some recreational Lasertag. Be careful, Aramis, your Bean is showing!

On a personal note, I’m happy to announce that two of my favorite fandoms are finally converging on each other, as Suraj Partha has become addicted to Doctor Who! I know your pain, Suraj. Now go spread the word!

  • Ender’s Game Cast Watch #4

    Ender’s Game Cast Watch #4

Another week of me stalking the Ender’s Game cast on the nets has come to a close. Let’s see what the kids have been up to.

Asa Butterfield has been all kinds of busy. Let’s start with the picture that finally made him Instagram-famous (and I wonder why):

    4asa_boat20130704

Looks like that was the last day in Greece, before he had to return to London for his Prom!

    4asa_prom_20130705

Also, in preparation of his appearance at the Ender’s Game panel on Thursday, July 18, Asa went shopping at Carnaby Street, London. Will he wow you all with his fashion sense?

    4asa_fashion

Personally, I’m slightly flashed by the pattern mix. But I’m sure that’s just me.

Speaking of Comic Con, Aramis Knight has confirmed that he will be signing autographs! He even gave a tentative date! Watch out for him on Saturday at the Summit booth! After Jimmy Pinchak, Aramis is the second non-panelist announcing that he is going to SDCC, but Khylin Rhambo, Brandon Soo Hoo, Conor Carroll and Caleb Thaggard are rumored to be there as well.  While the kids are getting excited for the big event, Harrison Ford seems to have the time and leisure for a trip to Peru.

Hailee Steinfeld has been caught up in other projects. Nevertheless she had the time to tweet about her new magazine cover as well as an interview she did about her upcoming film Romeo and Juliet. Watch it below!

    4hailee_magazine_20130704

Moises Arias has a new film … or rather, a video. He appears in his friend Willow Smith’s new music video “Summer Fling”.

Finally, Suraj Partha seems to have a little less time for fun stuff this summer, as he is studying for his SAT! I’m sure he will ace it, though, just like he just aced his AP EURO class (according to his facebook). He did, however, have the time to post a video of himself singing and playing the piano in Paris. So romantic!

  • Comic Con 2013 Thursday Schedule Released

Comic Con 2013 Thursday Schedule Released

    Comic-Con-Thursday

Comic Con International has begun rolling out their schedule and today they released the schedule for Thursday. Ender’s Game is slotted for 3:50 PM in Hall H along with Summit’s YA title Divergent.

With the two films sharing a one hour slot, that doesn’t seem to leave a whole lot of time for Ender’s Game, a half an hour at most. Hopefully they pack in as much as they can!

Stars Harrison Ford, Asa Butterfield, Hailee Steinfeld, and Abigail Breslin will be there along with producer Bob Orci and director Gavin Hood.

German movie distributor Constantin has launched its official Ender’s Game site. Apart from the trailer, the release date (October 24! YAY!), and a few interactive graphic elements, there isn’t much there yet, but we’re sure that more content will be added soon.  In any case, it looks pretty spiffy.  Check it out at www.enders-game-film.de/.
