New Stills and Behind-the-Scenes Images from ‘Ender’s Game’

    ENDER'S GAME

Thanks to Cosmic Book News (via Ender News), we’ve got a great first look at Bonzo and Ender facing off. We’ve all noted and discussed the noticeable height difference between Moises Arias (Bonzo) and Asa Butterfield (Ender) in the past, and this still gives us some insight into why despite that difference, Gavin Hood chose Arias to be Ender’s nemesis in Battle School. Petra standing there seems a bit odd, though.

New photo of Viola Davis as Major Gwen Anderson. Is she smiling at something Ender’s said to Graff, perhaps?

    ENDER'S GAME

This one is particularly interesting, as you can see looks of sadness on Bean and Petra and Graff happily explains something to a troubled Ender. Is this the reveal in the end?

It’s raining clips! Movieweb has also released the clip that was shown last week at the London Q&A at the Odean, an extended version of ‘Welcome to Battle School’.

VIDEO: Ender’s Game Command School Ice Battle

In this third clip from Ender’s Game, we get to see more of the ice battle, interspersed with a conversation between Graff and Anderson.

I found this one to be a little strange. Particularly, why are Anderson and Graff sitting next to each other, then suddenly in the next shot they’re sitting across each other? And why is Anderson at Command School when the calendar told us something else? Do you think they bring her there to evaluate his mental capacity to begin actual battles?

Remember, in the book Ender trains for a bit alone before the actual transition to real battles, so perhaps this is before that point. Thoughts?

This is also the first time we hear from Bernard! And looks like we now know that the big “NOW!” is from this battle, not the final battle!

Here’s a second clip from Ender’s Game showing Ender at Command School losing a lot of ships in a battle and then being reprimanded by Mazer. I guess we finally know why Ender was being glared at in that still!

The Ender’s Game Instagram account spent today unveiling pieces of a new collage today with the awesome tagline “The future must be won”. Kelly and I agreed on a recent episode of EnderCast that this was an amazing tagline so it’s great to see them using it. The full image is below:

Not sure how I missed this new still from last week, but here’s a new look at Ender and his Launchy group with Graff, who has a really odd stance here. This one is from the Boston Globe talking about “trouble ahead” with the fall movie season. (via Ender News)

So far this is the biggest size available, but if we get a bigger one we’ll be sure to let you know!

Also in new imagery is a montage of Petra posted to the official Ender’s Game social media channels today.

    Petra

The shot of Petra standing is a new one. I’m still a little bothered by her really long hair. Since I have long hair myself, I know what a bother hair that length can be, so it doesn’t make much sense to me that she’d have it at this length in Battle School. What do you guys think?

    Bean and Ender

The LA Times has published a set visit report and an interview with director Gavin Hood and gives us a bit more insight on how he came up with the Battle Room’s design. In addition to that, we have a photo of Ender and Bean in the Battle Room!

As written in the novel, the Battle Room feels like a big, dark room, and the “Ender’s Game” combat situations unfold on something akin to personal computers.

“You had to feel it was the real thing — not a video game on a screen,” Orci said. “Visually, it had to be visceral, a you-are-there experience.”

Hood says two chance visits to Los Angeles landmarks — Griffith Observatory for a planetarium show and Disney Hall for a symphony concert — helped him solve two of his most pressing visual obstacles.

During the planetarium show, Hood realized that the battling spaceships could fly around Ender and his subcommanders like so many spinning galaxies inside the domed Griffith theater, immersing the cast (and the audience) in the clashes. And in watching Gustavo Dudamel lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the filmmaker figured out that Ender could conduct his team of pilots as if he were guiding them through a prestissimo symphony — front and center, orchestrating everyone’s movements in harmony.

Hood’s production designers also enveloped the Battle Room with panoramic windows, so that the cadets were both figuratively and literally floating amid the stars. “What is the point of going into space and being stuck in a black box?” Hood said.

You can read the entire piece at LA Time’s Hero Complex.
